Job Summary

The Team:
Join our well-established Northeast Fish and Wildlife Team, a close-knit group of passionate and creative professionals dedicated to freshwater fisheries conservation. The Fisheries Team consists of two members, while the larger Fish and Wildlife Team includes seven individuals. As part of this team, you'll collaborate with Fish Biologists, Ecosystems Biologists, First Nations and other stakeholder groups to set fishing regulations and conduct fish population inventories, working together to conserve fisheries and provide valuable fishing opportunities to the public.

The Role:
As a Senior Fisheries Biologist, you will conduct inventories on freshwater fisheries, process permit applications, and create waterbody-specific regulations to support conservation. Your work ensures timely processing for clients and contributes to sustainable fishing opportunities. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside passionate biologists, survey fish populations in remote locations, and collaborate with First Nations in a Northern community, making a direct impact on fisheries conservation and management.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Must be a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) in BC with the College of Applied Biologist (CAB), or able to transfer a current RPBio membership to the CAB within six (6) months of employment. Preference may be given to applicants who are currently registered with the CAB. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in biological sciences or related field. Preference may be given to applicants with a PhD or Master's Degree specializing in fisheries management and/or fishery biology.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of related experience (or an acceptable combination of education and experience), including field-based biological sampling, analysis and reporting, and providing advice within a regulatory regime.
  • Experience assessing and monitoring natural resources.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid British Columbia Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent.

Further preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
  • Experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy.
  • One (1) or more years of combined experience directly supervising staff or leading projects with coordination of staff on projects within the last five (5) years.
  • Experience in development, budgeting, coordination, delivery and management of projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in methods and analysis of fisheries stock assessments and fish habitat assessments.
  • Demonstrated experience with liaising with environmental regulatory agencies, non-government agencies, public and private development agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in GIS spatial analysis, advanced statistical analysis, database management, and/or quantitative modelling.
  • Experience with working with First Nations.

Willingness Statements:
  • Willingness to meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
  • Must be physically able to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
  • Willingness to conduct field work in all weather conditions and environments. This may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in camp conditions and operation of a variety of equipment.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be based in Dawson Creek or Fort Saint John.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
