Job Description

The Actuarial Services department of WorkSafeBC is looking for an Actuarial Co-op student with Python focus to join our team to help us strive towards our vision.

The co-op student will assist the Actuarial Services department in a project of building an Actuarial machine learning model using Python, and assisting in some system designs. The tasks would include, but are not limited to, understanding the data, researching machine learning models used in the industry, writing Python codes, identifying key model features (e.g. machine learning model parameters) and documenting the results. This is an 8-month temporary opportunity starting in May 2025 with a possibility to extend to 12 months in total.

Where you'll work
At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines working remotely, and in our offices based on the operational needs of the position.

On Day 1 in this role, you will get a chance to meet your manager and get acquainted with your team. You will spend time setting up administrative and technological essentials, and completing onboarding tasks, including security and payroll setup.

During your first week you will engage in a comprehensive onboarding program designed to equip you for success. You will be partnering and meeting with your manager to discuss your goals and align them with the team's vision. Additionally, you will learn how our department contributes to the overall business strategy and supports the organization's mandate. You will also work through the onboarding program alongside your supervisor for added guidance and support.

This role is ideal for an individual who is eager to step beyond their comfort zone. We are looking for someone with a detective mindset, strong motivation, and a passion for innovation. The right candidate will possess analytical and critical thinking skills, enabling them to propose ideas that enhance various processes and initiatives, as well as to explore new approaches to work within the department.

Your daily responsibilities may include:
  • Identify and define problems, develop and describe research questions, and develop sound and novel approaches to problem solving and propose recommendations and business solutions.
  • Research industry used machine learning models.
  • Work directly with complex data and identify useful data or suggest potential data transformation (or feature engineering) useful for the modeling purpose.
  • Work closely with the project team to conceptualize, develop, and implement machine learning models using Python.
  • Work closely with the technology team on system requirements and designs
  • Evaluate the performance of the model against benchmarks.
  • Prepare clear and concise business documents and presentations, successfully translating complex and technical information into concepts the business representatives can understand and action.

  • Demonstrate strong Python and analytical skills
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of machine learning models
  • Communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, with a variety of people
  • Problem-solve solutions and enjoys analyzing business questions to propose and implement solutions
  • Demonstrate tact and discretion when handling confidential data
  • Effectively collaborate and interact with a range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrate teamwork and organization skills, and is detail-oriented
  • Be curious, receptive to learning and willing to ask questions

Your background and experience
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution studying in Computer Sciences, Statistics, or a related area.
  • Strong proficiency with Python.
  • Working knowledge in data engineering design and implementation including expertise in ETL languages (e.g. SQL, Python) and analytics data modelling
  • Solid knowledge of machine learning.
  • Previous work experience in Python coding and machine learning modeling would be an important asset.

  • Confirm you're a registered student at a post-secondary institution and is participating in a work integrated learning program
  • Consent to a criminal record check and successfully meet the criminal record check clearance
